Such a Beautiful Candle

The text for today’s message comes out of Luke 8:16-18.

No man, when he hath lighted a candle, covereth it with a vessel, or putteth it under a bed; but setteth it on a candlestick, that they which enter in may see the light.

For nothing is secret, that shall not be made manifest; neither any thing hid, that shall not be known and come abroad.

Take heed therefore how ye hear: for whosoever hath, to him shall be given; and whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he seemeth to have.

Luke 8:16-19

For the past few weeks, Erin and I have intently searched through our lives looking for anything contrary to the Word of God. One thing is certain, the more you intently look, the more God will reveal. I find how easy I can put on a front that I’m doing well. I can fool my neighbors, my co-workers, my family and even my wife. However, I cannot fool myself, I cannot fool Satan and I definitely cannot fool God. My walk with God flows through everything I do and say. I can talk the good talk, but if my walk is out of shape then my words will come back pointless.

I choose the title, because Candles are everywhere. They are on the counter and the mantle. They come in all shapes and sizes and some are incredibly elaborate. They all have the same purpose, to burn and provide light. Many of us only use our candles when we need them. They sit on the shelf until the power goes out, then we will pull them down and light them. When they are no longer needed, we blow out the flame and put the candle back up.

We that are Christians are called to be the lights to the world.

Do all things without murmurings and disputings:

That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;

Phl 2:14-15

But, how can we be lights if our candle is on the shelf and our flame is out? We can be such a beautiful candle sitting the shelf for the world to see, but if unless our flame is burning we are useless as lights. Is your flame really lit? We had better be burning, because the world will know. When we go out, we may look like we have things settled, but the truth will be revealed.

In Luke, Christ makes clear the fact that what we do in secret will be make known. Is your flame burning? You will know because it will burn all the time, even when you are by yourself. We can become so naive that we think we can live as we please, as long as no one is watching. We can fake righteousness for the most part, but when the time comes we need to be close to God our lives fall apart.  You can have the most beautiful candle in the world, but if it is not lit the candle is unless. The same is true for us, if we are not burning we are useless for Christ. A candle that is burning will give absolutely no doubt that it has fire. Firstly, the candle will create light. Not only light, but also heat.  Not only heat, but also scent and smoke. Finally, not only scent and smoke, but the wax will melt and flow all around it. We say we are on fire, we say we are living right. But, if we do not have the evidence, our candles are not lit and we are of no use to Christ. We can go into the world looking great, but if that candle is not burning then we will be no effect. How can you sow if you do not have a hoe and how can you reap if your sickle is dull?

What we need to realize is that our lives when we are with no one will reflect the state of our candle. Do I spend more time on the computer then reading the word of God? When I hit my hand with a hammer, what comes out of my mouth? If my life is not full of Christ, then my candle needs to be re-lit.I think of what I’ve done today and wonder what if. What if I carried a camera in my hand all day and recorded everything that I’ve done and posted it for all to see. How long would it take before someone would say, “He’s not the man I thought he was.” or “I thought he lived for Christ?”. I need to understand the truth that what I do will eventually be revealed.

And the land be subdued before the LORD: then afterward ye shall return, and be guiltless before the LORD, and before Israel; and this land shall be your possession before the LORD.

But if ye will not do so, behold, ye have sinned against the LORD: and be sure your sin will find you out.

Num 32:22-23

Some way and some how, if I am not living what I say I am, I will be exposed. I have a guarantee of that. As I said earlier, three know who I really am; God, Satan and myself. Satan knows my walk with Christ. I have no doubt he knows how many times I pray and read my Bible. He also knows what I claim myself to be. He also knows what to send my way to totally expose me, destroy my testimony and make my life a reproach to the name of Christ. Several years back I remember a football team. They beat everybody and went into the final game undefeated. Everybody thought they were strong and powerful, and could beat anybody. They looked good, until they played a team out of their league. In that final game, they were not only beat, but beat so bad they were made a laughing stock. We had better beware, because if our lives are not in order with Christ. If we do not have our candle lit and burning, we can be assured that we will be exposed. We may can fool most people, however there will come a day when our lives are opened and all will see who we really are. We can easily hide a candle that is not burning in the day, but when the light is turned off, then we have no way to hid it.

Is your candle truly burning? God formed us as candles to be used, not to sit on the shelf. If they light around you was turned off, would you still burn brightly? If you really are burning, then you will not only create light, but also heat. Your life for Christ will burn the world and they will not not like you. Not only heat, but smoke and scent. In the temple, incense was offered unto God and we are called a sweet savour unto God through Christ. If our flame is burning, then our lives will be continuous worship to God. Lastly, if our flame is lit, then wax will be everywhere. God will pour out in all that we do and we will be full of the Holy spirit. The holy spirit will flow out in all that we do.
